"Yesterday there was the largest funeral that ever took place in Norsewood. It was that of Mr John OLSEN, of Norsewood. The deceased had been a member of the Norsewood Brass Band since its formation. The band therefore met, and as a mark of respect to their fellowhandsman played while his remains were being conveyed to their last resting place. At about 2 o'clock the band formed in marching order at the residence of the parents of the deceased, where the body was lying, and then the whole of the procession (numbering between 500 and 600 persons) moved off to the solemn strains of the band, under Bandmaster CHICKEN, playing the "Dead March in Saul"."

"The playing of the "Dead March in Saul" at the funeral of the late John OLSEN. by the Norsewood Brass Band was the first occasion on which it had been performed in the district, and the many favorable comments that were heard on all sides proved that the performance of it had given every satisfaction. Taking into consideration that events of this description allow of a very short practice, it certainly reflects great credit on the Band."

"Funeral at Norsewood.
On Sunday last quite a number of people visited Norsewood on purpose to attend the funeral of the late John OLSEN. About two o'ciock the Norsewoood Brass Band (of which the deceased had been a member since its formation) under the leadership of Mr J. CHICKEN formed into position, the drum being muffled, and the instruments craped. Mr SHUGAR acted as Marshal. The order of the processsion was first the band, next the hearse, followed by the chief mourners and relatives, and then came a number of friends on foot, the vehicles followed by the horsemen coming next. The Dead March, from "Saul" was played by the Band as the procession wended its way slowly towards the Lutheran Church. The solemnity of the occasion was greatly increased by the rise and fall of the music, weird and intense as it was, its effect being inexpressibly depressing. On arriving at the Church the Band opened out so as to allow the cortege to pass through, and the coffin was carried and placed in the aisle of the Church. The lid was removed and many availed themselves of the opportunity of seeing, the last of their young friend and companion. Pastor LEGARD [LEGARTH] of Makaretu, conducted the service in a very effective and impressive manner, opening with a very beautiful hymn. An oxtempore address was delivered by the rev. gentleman, who exhorted all to be prepared for death when it came upon them, reminding his hearers that old and young were likely to be called, and urging them to take the present occasion to heart, and by faith and a righteous life be prepared. The earnestness and effectiveness of the discourse were shown by the manner in which it affected his hearers. After the conclusion of the service the procession resumed its order of marching, only that the number was very visibly increased, fully five hundrod following on foot, vehicles to the number of fifteen coming next, followed by about twenty horsemen. On arriving at the Cemetery the Band again opened out, and the cortege passed through and congregated round the grave, where the final ceremony was performed with an impressiveness and solemnity befitting the occasion. As a last tribute to the memory of their deceased fellow-bandsman his favorite march, "Only to see her face again," was played by the Band as it left the Cemetery."
