Lost Records: Persons Buried in Unmarked or Unknown Graves

Many of the graves in the Norsewood Cemetery are in a serious state of decay with the inscriptions on the headstones almost illegible. Other graves are now completely unmarked, and many graves on the cemetery records, including those of victims of the 1882 flu epidemic, are simply marked “unknown”. However, the locations of many unmarked graves can be determined from the Norsewood Cemetery plan.
“As you enter the gate, a large uninterrupted patch of green is to your right... No one knows with certainty who lies in this green area. The wooden crosses that once marked graves there were burnt in the big fire of 1888, and any new ones that may have replaced them have long since rotted away. However, we do know this was where children were buried after a tragic [1882 flu] epidemic... Unfortunately, fire also consumed the church records...”

Another problem with tracing those who could have been buried at Norsewood is that some of the early settlers buried family members on their private property instead of at the cemetery. The following are lists of those who are known to have been buried at Norsewood Cemetery, New Zealand (but are not in the Tararua District Council Records), those who could have been buried at Norsewood Cemetery, and those known to have been buried on private property.
Can you help? If you can shed any light on unmarked/unknown graves, have photos of old grave markers (eg, totara (timber) grave markers), or know of burials on private property, please contact us.
