"An old settler named Jan JONASEN, aged 76, died suddenly at his home on the Third Line, near Norsewood yesterday morning. It appears that he was outside chopping wood when he was observed to fall, and when the inmates of the house reached him, he was dead. Deceased was a patient in the Waipukurau hospital about four years ago, and later was attended by Dr BIRMINGHAM for asthma, but as Dr Veitch would not give a certificate of death an inquest was held to-day before the district coroner and the following jury: O. ERICKSEN (foreman), W. D. FULTON, T. H. BARCLAY, R. STAUNTON, W. PARSONS, and O. O. NORDBYE. The evidence of deceased's son and Dr V EITCH was taken, after which the jury brought in a verdict that death was caused by natural causes, the medical evidence going to show that the deceased suffered from fatty degeneration of the heart. Deceased was one of the oldest settlers in the district, having arrived with the pioneers just 36 years ago, next Sunday, and at the close of the inquest, Mr ERICKSEN, on behalf of the jury, expressed in a few kindly words the sympathy which the residents of Norsewood felt for the family in their sudden bereavement."
