One of first settlers at Norsewood, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.
Death Registration says he was survived by 1 daughter aged 23 years. So Alette was not considered his daughter.

Name recorded in Norwegian records as both Marthe and Mathea.

Alette Karine was born out of wedlock. Her mother’s name was Ellen Mathea JOHANNESDATTER and she was a maid at Bore(?). Father was tailor trainee from Sweden, August Wilhelm HOLM. He was travelling the area for work (omreisende). Cannot explain why Alette got the patrynom KARLSDATTER, it should have been AUGUSTDATTER. Unless, she was protecting August Wilhelm HOLM, or someone else. (Source: Brian CROSS (Australia), eMail, 10 Apr 2007.)
Caroline was Marthea's neice (sister's daughter). She travelled to New Zealand with her uncle and aunt, Edvard KRISTOFFERSEN (CHRISTOFFERSEN) and Marthea JOHANNESDATTER, under he name Allette K. KRISTOFFERSEN. (Source: Brian CROSS (Australia), eMail, 10 Apr 2007.)
The next official document for Alette was an application to marry. The application date was on the 26th May 1874... Karine has changed to Karoline, and change her age to 19 years. This document shows that Alette was in Ormond for 1 year. (which is about 17 km outside of Gisborne on the road to Whakatane.)
This means that Alette left Norsewood 8 months after arriving from Norway at the age of 15 years, and would have been 16 years of age when she arrived in Ormond. My New Zealand-Norwegian researcher suggests she had applied for a job as a housekeeper for Aubrey CROSS who had a carting/carrier business between Ormond and Gisborne. I think Alette put up her age to 18 when making her application for the position, as not many would have hired a 16 year old housekeeper. Aubrey CROSS had been in Ormond for seven years.
Because of the phonetics, this is a possible reason why Great-grandfather Aubrey CROSS called her Maggie, he could not pronounce the Norwegian accent Alette to her satisfaction, so he called her Maggie, as she was known to all friends and neighbours.
They where married on the 9th June 1874 at the Registrar’s Office in Gisborne.
