Son of Peder Edvard (Peter Edward (Edward)) HANSEN and his wife, Jørgine (Georgina) LARSDATTER LUNDHAUG. John's mother died from complications 10 days after his birth. He was raised by Ole Kristian (Ole Christian) TORKILSEN and his wife, Maren Helene (Maren Helena) SEVERSEN.
John was killed at the Somme in 1916 and appears on the Norsewood memorial as John TORKILDSEN and, at Dannevirke, HANSEN has been added after his name on the ANZAC Memorial.
