Peter Andreas (Andrew) BIRKEGAARD (PETERS)

Introduction

In 1872, Andreas BIRKEGAARD, his wife, Antonette, and two of their three children, Peter Nikolaj (Nick) and Ottomina Kristina Maria, emigrated from Denmark as “assisted immigrants” aboard the Ballarat, to Napier, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. They arrived on September 01, 1872, after a voyage of 87 days. Their eldest child, Klaudiane, remained in Denmark with her grandfather.

The BIRKEGAARD family was supposed to settle at Dannevirke, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, but said “no” to settling in the bush, and headed back to the Napier area. They lived in Waipukurau, Waipawa, Hastings, Havelock North, and Napier (all in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand), and Andreas owned a boot shop in Havelock North.

Andreas BIRKEGAARD changed his name to Andrew PETERS.

Andreas and Antonette had 11 children in New Zealand (14 children in total), two of whom died in childhood.
