Amund AMUNDSEN and family were Norwegians who emigrated to New Zealand in 1875 aboard the "Fritz Reuter" departing Hamburg, Germany (16 Dec 1874) arriving Napier, New Zealand (18 Mar 1875). The passenger list records Amund with his wife, Elise, and 4 children (Carl, 8 years; Lars, 5 years; Annie, 3 years; Albert, 6 months).
It was believed that Amund had lived for several years in Sweden before emigrating to New Zealand in 1875. However, this is probably incorrect.
The book, "Svenskarna I Nya Zeeland: Den svenska utvandringen till Nya Zeeland fram till 1940" (which translates to "The Swedes in New Zealand: The Swedish emigration to New Zealand until 1940") by Sten Aminoff (Publ 1888, ISSN 0284-8341), incorrectly records Amund AMUNDSEN as being Swedish instead of Norwegian.
Amund AMUNDSEN was balloted, and took up, section 161 on the Danish Line, Norsewood/Ormondville, New Zealand. He pioneered (cleared and established) this section.
Naturalisation papers for Amund on 09 Oct 1876 (Source: Ted NIKOLAISON) or 1877 at Norsewood, New Zealand (Source: Mary Knight).
From "101 Years of Ormondville", p135: "A Union Rifle Club was founded in 1903 under the leadership of Capt. G. Forbes with Messers F.B. Curd and W. Johnstone of Ormondville and Makotuku as lieuteants. Rev. A.S. Webb was Chaplain and Donald McGavin M.D. was surgeon. Camps were held on Amundsen farm."
Bush Advocate, 17 February 1902, Page 2, column 5.
A disagreeable accident occurred at the Union Rifles camp at Ormondville yesterday afternoon. A lad named Michael O'BRIEN was leading a horse when he tripped and was trodden upon the wrist, which was broken. Mr AMUNDSEN quickly had his buggy ready, and drove the sufferer off to Dr HALSE-FRANCIS.
